Do NFL Players Use HGH?

Written by John Matthews - January 29, 2023

It can be difficult to answer the question of whether NFL players use Human Growth Hormone (HGH) without a definitive yes or no response. However, there is mounting evidence that suggests its usage among professional football players.

Recently, Major League Baseball superstar Barry Bonds testified in court that he knowingly used performance enhancing drugs during his career. While Bonds did not specifically mention HGH, it has been widely reported that he used it to help him recover from injuries more quickly than normal and enhance his power as a hitter. This raises questions about the prevalence of such drugs in professional sports leagues, and particularly in American football where conditions for players can often be very grueling.

The National Football League does not currently test for HGH and it has never been suspended or banned from play in any way. It is possible though, that with increased scrutiny from the media and fans alike, the league may implement testing for the drug at some point in the future. Until then, all we have are rumors and speculation about its usage among professional athletes.

What we do know however are side effects associated with taking HGH as well potential legal issues related to it. For example, users may experience an increase in joint pain due to overdevelopment of muscles and connective tissues as well as an increase in blood pressure which could lead to a higher risk of stroke or heart attack. In terms of legal issues, using the substance is considered illegal by many states across America regardless of whether it is prescribed or not.

High profile cases have also pointed towards an uptick in usage among younger athletes who may be looking for a way around restrictions put forth by their schools or governing bodies regarding performance-enhancing substances. Unfortunately, this could create a dangerous culture where athletes feel they need to resort to such measures if they want to compete at a high level; something that should be vigorously discouraged by leagues worldwide given health risks associated with misuse of HGH.
