Menopause is a natural process of aging during which a woman ceases to menstruate and becomes infertile. Women experience hormonal changes which can lead to irregular or absent periods, with the average age for menopause being 51 in the United States. It is possible for a woman going through menopause to become pregnant, even if she has not had her period for several months or years.

Perimenopause & Fertility
Perimenopause is the stage before menopause when hormones fluctuate and periods may become irregular or altogether stop. Ovarian function can be unpredictable during perimenopause and although it may sometimes seem that an individual's body has gone into a “hibernation” state whereby menstruation no longer occurs, there is still potential for conception under certain conditions.

It is indeed possible to get pregnant after menopause has started, but this scenario is highly unlikely and occurs only in very rare cases where ovulation still takes place despite the lack of menstruation. However, due to the significant decrease in hormone levels after menopausal onset, most women who experience post-menopausal pregnancies do so only through assisted reproductive therapies such as IVF (in vitro fertilization). If a woman does become pregnant after menopausal onset then the fetus will often be at risk due to advanced maternal age (over 35) coupled with earlier hormonal changes that have already taken place within the body since menopausal onset began.
Hormone Replacement Therapy & Post-Menopausal Conception
The use of Hormone replacement therapies (HRT) may offer some benefit for conception during or following menopausal transition when hormones are declining rapidly. In general HRT’s primary purpose is relief from unpleasant symptoms related to aging however many patients undergoing hormone therapy report increased libido and improved fertility potential making it theoretically possible that conception could occur while using HRT although there have been no reports confirming this phenomenon directly to date.
